Nano Tank Starter Guide: 5 and 10 Gallon Setups That Work

Nano tanks are not beginner tanks. They are small-volume tanks that punish mistakes faster. Done properly they are some of the most beautiful aquariums in the hobby.

Why small tanks are harder

Everything happens faster in less water. A dead shrimp, a missed water change or a heater failure that a 40-gallon absorbs without a flicker will spike a 5-gallon overnight. Temperature also tracks the room almost instantly. The compensation is discipline: smaller, more frequent water changes and very light stocking.

Three stocking plans that work

5 gallon — shrimp colony

10–15 cherry shrimp, heavily planted with moss and a sponge filter. Almost no bioload, extremely stable, and endlessly watchable. The single best use of a 5-gallon tank.

10 gallon — nano shoal

8–10 chili rasboras or ember tetras plus 6 cherry shrimp. Dark substrate, floating plants, gentle filter. One species of fish only.

10 gallon — centrepiece

One honey gourami plus 6 pygmy corydoras, or a single betta with nerite snails. Resist adding anything else.

Frequently asked questions

What fish can live in a 5 gallon tank?

Realistically one betta, or a colony of cherry shrimp, or a single small shoal of the very smallest rasboras in a heavily planted setup. A 5 gallon is not a community tank.

How many fish in a 10 gallon tank?

One shoaling species of 6–10 individuals under 1.5 inches, plus shrimp or snails. For example 8 ember tetras and 6 cherry shrimp.

Are nano tanks good for beginners?

Not especially. Small volumes swing in temperature and chemistry much faster than large ones, so mistakes have less margin. A 20-gallon long is an easier first tank.

Do nano tanks need a filter?

Yes. A gentle sponge filter is ideal — it provides biological filtration without the strong flow that pushes small fish around.
