How to Cycle a Fish Tank: Step-by-Step (Fishless Method)
What "cycling a tank" actually means
A new aquarium is sterile. Fish produce ammonia continuously through their gills and waste, and ammonia is acutely toxic — at 0.5 ppm it burns gill tissue, and at 2 ppm it kills most freshwater species within days. Nothing in a brand-new tank removes it.
Cycling means growing two colonies of bacteria in your filter media that do this work for you:
- Nitrosomonas convert ammonia (NH₃) into nitrite (NO₂⁻). Nitrite is still highly toxic.
- Nitrobacter and Nitrospira convert nitrite into nitrate (NO₃⁻), which is roughly a hundred times less toxic and which you remove with weekly water changes.
A tank is "cycled" when both colonies are large enough to process a full day's ammonia load in under 24 hours. That is a measurable state, not a feeling: you dose ammonia, wait a day, and both ammonia and nitrite read zero.

Fish-in cycling is not a shortcut — it is slower, more work, and it permanently damages gill tissue in the fish that endure it. The only legitimate reason to do it is that you already have fish in an uncycled tank, in which case skip to the emergency section.
What you need
- A liquid test kit measuring ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. Paper strips are too imprecise for cycling — they will tell you "some nitrite" when you need to know whether it is 0 or 0.25 ppm. This is the one purchase you genuinely cannot substitute.
- Pure ammonia — household ammonia with no surfactants, perfumes or colourants. Shake the bottle: if it foams, do not use it. Alternatively use ammonium chloride solution sold for this purpose.
- A dechlorinator for the tap water. Chlorine and chloramine kill the bacteria you are trying to grow.
- Your filter, running 24/7, with the heater set to 80–84°F. Warmth roughly doubles bacterial reproduction speed.
- Optional but very useful: a handful of established filter media, gravel or a mature sponge from a healthy tank. This can cut the cycle from five weeks to five days.
The step-by-step process
Step 1 — set up and run the tank (day 0)
Fill the tank with dechlorinated water, install and start the filter and heater, add substrate, hardscape and plants. Set the temperature to 80–84°F. Leave the light off or on a short cycle — you do not want an algae bloom competing for ammonia. Let everything run for 24 hours to confirm nothing leaks and the heater holds temperature.
Step 2 — dose ammonia to 2 ppm (day 1)
Add ammonia until a test reads 2 ppm. Do not aim higher: above about 5 ppm ammonia actually inhibits the bacteria you want and stalls the cycle. Note how many drops or millilitres it took to reach 2 ppm in your specific tank — you will reuse that number for the rest of the process.
Step 3 — test daily and wait for nitrite (days 2–14)
Test ammonia and nitrite every day. For the first week nothing much happens; this is normal and it is where most people give up. Somewhere between day 5 and day 14, ammonia starts dropping and nitrite appears. That is the first colony coming online. Every time ammonia reaches 0, dose back up to 2 ppm — the bacteria need continuous food or the colony stops growing.
Step 4 — the nitrite spike (days 10–28)
Nitrite will climb, often off the top of the test chart, and stay there for one to three weeks. This is the longest and most frustrating phase. Nitrite-oxidising bacteria reproduce more slowly than ammonia-oxidisers, so there is nothing to do but keep dosing ammonia and keep testing.
Step 5 — the 24-hour test (the only test that matters)
Once you see nitrite falling and nitrate appearing, start the confirmation test:
- Dose ammonia back to 2 ppm.
- Wait exactly 24 hours.
- Test ammonia and nitrite.
If both read 0 ppm, your tank is cycled. Nitrate will read somewhere between 20 and 80 ppm. If either reads above 0, wait two more days and repeat. Pass this test twice in a row before trusting it.
Step 6 — big water change and stock (day 21–42)
Do a 50–80% water change to bring nitrate under 20 ppm, match the temperature to your target species, and add fish within 24 hours. A cycled filter with no ammonia source starts dying back within a day or two. Because you cycled to a full 2 ppm load, you can stock reasonably heavily straight away rather than adding one fish at a time.

How to cycle a tank faster
- Seed the filter. A used sponge, a cup of gravel or a piece of established media from a healthy tank is by far the most effective accelerator. It can reduce the cycle to under a week. Ask a local fish shop or a hobbyist — most will hand you one for free.
- Keep it warm. 80–84°F roughly doubles the speed versus 72°F.
- Add live plants. Fast growers like hornwort, water sprite and floating plants consume ammonia directly, and they arrive carrying useful bacteria.
- Aerate. Nitrifying bacteria are aerobic. An air stone or a surface-agitating filter output speeds things measurably.
- Bottled bacteria — sometimes. Refrigerated, in-date products containing live Nitrospira can help. Shelf-stable bottles that have sat in a warm shop for a year usually do nothing. Treat them as a bonus, never as a replacement for testing.
Common cycling mistakes
Changing water constantly during a fishless cycle
You are not protecting anything — there are no fish. Water changes only remove the ammonia your bacteria need. Change water only if nitrite is off the chart or at the very end.
Rinsing filter media in tap water
Chlorine kills the colony instantly. Rinse media in a bucket of old tank water, and only when flow is visibly reduced.
Trusting test strips
Strips routinely read "0" when a liquid kit shows 0.25 ppm ammonia. That difference matters enormously.
Adding fish because "it has been three weeks"
Time is not the test. The 24-hour test is the test.
Over-dosing ammonia
Above 5 ppm you inhibit the bacteria and stall for weeks. Stick to 2 ppm.
Emergency: fish-in cycling
If you already have fish in an uncycled tank, your job is damage control:
- Test ammonia and nitrite daily. Keep both under 0.25 ppm at all times.
- Water change whenever either exceeds 0.25 ppm — typically 30–50%, every day or two. Match the temperature and always dechlorinate.
- Use an ammonia-binding conditioner such as a Prime-type product. It detoxifies ammonia for about 24 hours without removing it, so the bacteria still get fed.
- Feed lightly. Every uneaten flake becomes ammonia. Feed every other day during cycling.
- Do not add more fish until the tank passes a 24-hour test.
Expect six to ten weeks. Once cycled, add remaining stock gradually — one small group at a time, two weeks apart.
After the cycle: keeping it alive
A cycle is a living thing and it can be lost. The usual causes are: a filter left off for more than a few hours, media rinsed in chlorinated water, antibiotic medication dosed into the display tank, or the tank sitting empty without an ammonia source. If you ever see ammonia in an established tank, it means the colony has been damaged — test, water change, and find the cause rather than dosing chemicals.
